What is the cocktail party effect?

In complex acoustical scenarios, e.g., a party, the brain can identify and localize specific sound sources and focus its auditory attention on particular stimuli while filtering out a range of other stimuli. For example, a partygoer can concentrate on one conversation in a noisy room. This ability, described as "selective attention" or "selective hearing," is essential for hearing in noisy environments. One basis for this is binaural perception. You can experience it for yourself: in a noisy or reverberant location, seal one ear off with a finger and be amazed at what human binaural signal processing can do – or what you cannot do without it.
