Psychoacoustics Masterclass with HEAD acoustics

Young man in front of a whiteboard

Duration

Three-day course
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Class size limit
Max 5 (to ensure interaction and hands‑on learning)

Price
$4000

Equip NVH and acoustic engineers with a practical, application‑oriented understanding of psychoacoustics, enabling them to evaluate sound not just by physical metrics, but by human perception. This masterclass focuses on how psychoacoustic parameters are derived, how they should be interpreted, and how they can be used to explain sound quality issues and support engineering decisions.

The course bridges the gap between objective measurement and subjective experience, giving participants the tools and confidence to apply psychoacoustics in real‑world development workflows.

Program:

  • Introduction to psychoacoustics and sound perception
  • Limitations of purely physical metrics (SPL, FFT, orders)
  • Auditory system fundamentals relevant to engineering
  • Loudness: concepts, models, and interpretation
  • Sharpness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and tonality
  • Temporal aspects of sound perception
  • Stationary vs. non‑stationary signals
  • Listening examples and guided perception exercises
  • Calculation and visualization of psychoacoustic metrics using HEAD acoustics tools
  • Correlating psychoacoustic metrics with subjective impressions
  • Use of psychoacoustics in NVH and sound quality engineering
  • Identifying dominant perceptual contributors in complex signals
  • Common misunderstandings and misuses of psychoacoustic metrics
  • Best practices for reporting psychoacoustic results
  • Communicating sound quality findings to non‑experts
  • Case studies: applying psychoacoustics to real development problems
  • Hands‑on exercises with discussion and interpretation

Target group:

  • NVH and acoustic engineers
  • Sound quality engineers
  • Test and development engineers working with noise data
  • Engineers who need to explain sound quality issues clearly and convincingly
  • Teams introducing psychoacoustics into their development process

Prerequisite:

  • Basic understanding of acoustics and noise measurements
  • Familiarity with frequency domain data
  • Prior experience with HEAD acoustics software is beneficial but not required

Remarks:

Training material is provided as a PDF on a USB stick. Tuning results will also be provided digitally. Laptops and front ends are available for all participants.

Available at your location for 3 registrations or more.
The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 5. In this way, we guarantee each participant individual support and maximum hands-on time with the equipment.

HEAD acoustics, Inc. reserves the right to cancel a scheduled class, at least 5 business days in advance. Your method of payment will not be charged in the event of cancellation, or we will request cancellation of your purchase order.

Registration is possible up to 5 days prior, but payment must be received within 5 business days of the scheduled class.
