The software HAE-BGN supports the semi-automated equalization of 4.1 loudspeaker arrangements in a lab. Additionally, it enables the automated playback of background noise and thus a realistic simulation. Based on the equalization, it is possible to reproduce previously recorded noises in level and spectrum at an arbitrary location in the vehicle (e.g. DUT microphone). This allows precise reproduction of the sound field at this location.

HAE-BGN complies with the international standard ETSI ES 202 396-1.

For recording and playback of background noises, further hardware components like labCORE (recording), labBGN (equalization, playback) as well as loudspeakers and a power amplifier are required. HAE-BGN operates interactively with these components as well as with the artificial head measurement systems HMS II.3, HMS II.3-LN, and HMS II.4.

Background noise

Background noises are present in most phone conversations and when operating voice recognition systems, thus impairing the quality of speech communication. Therefore, it is necessary to test these devices with realistic and reproducible background noises. A corresponding system for background noise simulation consists of hardware components for recording, equalization and playback as well as a main control software covering the functionalities.

Highlights

  • HAE-BGN enables the equalized playback of binaurally or monaurally recorded background noise in a lab.
  • The software reproduces level and spectrum of noise at an arbitrary location in a lab.
  • HAE-BGN complies with the international standard ETSI ES 202 396-1.
  • The software enables testing voice quality of telecommunication devices and the quality of voice recognition systems in the presence of background noise.

Applications

  • Tests of the voice quality in the presence of background noise of communication devices like e.g.:
    • Mobile phones
    • Smartphones (with/without display speaker)
    • ANC headphones and headsets
    • Voice-controlled smart home devices like smart speaker
  • Evaluation of voice recognition performance in the presence of background noise in communication devices like e.g.:
    • Mobile phones
    • Smartphones (with/without display speaker)
    • ANC headphones and headsets
    • Voice-controlled smart home devices like smart speaker
  • Precise sound field reproduction at the location of the device under test
  • Equalized playback of background noise and reverberation in the laboratory
  • Development, optimization and quality control of communication devices in the presence of background noise and reverberation

Features

  • HAE-BGN enables semi-automated equalization of the whole system – in contrast to fully automated equalization with 3PASS lab, the latest-generation simulation software.
  • The equalization can be performed using measurement microphone or binaural ear simulators of the artificial heads HMS II.3/ MS II.3-LN/HMS II.4.
  • Playback via a trigger signal with other systems  (e.g. ACQUA, VoCAS) can be sample-accurately synchronized.
  • HAE-BGN includes noise databases as specified by ETSI standards ES 202 396-1 and TS 103 224.
  • The software allows to reproduce noise environments according to recommendation ITU-T G.160.
  • HAE-BGN can be remote controlled via optional cable CUU I.
